Mr. Fedor Konyukhov is ready for an expedition across Greenland

Fedor Konyukhov, famous Russian traveler, announced the start of his unique expedition to Greenland by ice-yacht. He is going to have a 7-km individual journey east to west of Greenland. A management team will meet the traveler at the start and finish of the journey.

No one has gone on such a journey before; it is the ice-routes that are regular in Greenland. But ice-yacht is a special task, because there is no experience, no methods and recommendations how to move at 10 kph when there are splits, and ice and snow are not so smooth as in sport routes that are usually laid along icy surface of a lake.

“The ice-yacht is unlikely to drive me all the route; I am more likely to pull it half of the route, because wind is very weak at the very top of glacial peaks and the surface can make me “crawl” as it would be impossible to sail”, - Mr. Konyukhov pointed out during a press-conference.

Another feature of the route is that it is stretched east to west while other travelers go west to east of Greenland. Moreover, ice sheet of the island is a mountain system of 2500 meters a.s.l. The journey starts at 100 meters a.s.l. and Fedor Konyukhov will have to sail uphill and hence he will sail down after a notch, what is rather a complicated task for an ice-yacht to perform.

Mr. Konyuknov takes also ski, sledge and a rucksack. “If the ice-yacht breaks down, I will have to leave it and proceed my journey skiing like legendary Nansen. This is a usual thing for me”, - he pointed out during a prestarting press-conference.

The management team will follow the journey receiving signal from a satellite drogue which will report ice-yacht’s position and speed every 15 minutes.
